My name is Tony Allaway and, having worked in turn on both  English language Iranian newspapers (Kayhan International and Tehran Journal), I reported on the Iranian revolution, Iran-Iraq war and American hostage crisis (the only journalist there for all 444 days the crisis lasted) for several publications – The Times, The Sunday Times, Christian Science Monitor, Newsweek Magazine plus the  NBC  broadcasting network (later switching to  CBS). I also distributed a news monitoring service in Iran called The Flame, after I and my colleague Ralph Joseph agreed to close our very succesful, but increasingly risky underground newsletter Iran Pool Report.

I had hoped to continue working in Iran (a truly beautiful and absorbing country), but a brief spell in Evin prison (together with the aforementioned Mr Joseph)  persuaded me that I might not have a long-term future there. I now work for The Sunday Times in London.

Here’s something I prepared earlier:

Khomeini: my part in his rising
